Hello and welcome.
musings on photos and narrative (and weddings!!)
I don’t think I’ve posted anything like this since the days of Tumblr and anonymously posting my poetry and fisheye photos of tie-dye and Warped Tour. I’m dating myself- yikes.
My intention behind this blog (because let’s be real and call it what it is) is to combine the visual story-telling of photography along with the narrative pieces that so often feel like they can’t be shared on photo sharing platforms like Instagram. I’ll likely still post similar photos on here and IG, but I expect this space to share more of the BTS of the work so to speak.
I often don’t share the stories behind my photographs, mostly because I feel like most people aren’t interested in them with the exception of a select few people who would live in my skin if they could (the feeling is mutual). I also still struggle to call myself a “photographer” despite the fact that I have been introduced to many groups of people within the past year by that title. At what point does someone call themselves a photographer? An artist? Are there invisible thresholds someone has to meet? Does it even matter? Literally no. I take photos, like a lot of photos, but I don’t know that being called a photographer will ever feel right. When I post photos online, I feel like piece of the story is missing. It’s one thing to frame up a nice shot, which I know I can do, but it’s another to take a photo that evokes something and to then tie that visual representation to an appropriately relevant narrative.
That is the initial intention behind this space! You can expect musings on portraiture, fashion, and just general life story-telling. I also have a few projects brewing for 2025, so I plan to share a bit about them on here, too.
The meat and potatoes of this post:
I am getting married this year (yay!) I have a lot of ideas for our wedding I won’t be sharing on here, mostly because even though it is well-intentioned, I am not looking for feedback from my virtual community at this point in time. I am very lucky to have the people I have in my life who are very well informed on the wedding scene, so I will be going to them for advice for now. One thing I don’t mind sharing about on here is the hunt for my DRESS. I won’t be giving you full spoilers because I do still want the final product to be a SURPRISE!!!!!! but I have been working with a local tailor who is helping me create my dream dress :’) Before my first appointment, we learned we only live a block away from one another so picture this: me running down the street with my dress in a plastic garment bag from the 70s. I don’t know if I’ll get the chance to, but I really hope to photograph a lot of the wedding planning process. The photos I included with this post are just a few I snapped at my most recent tailor appointment. I’m really excited to share the story behind how I met my tailor, the dress we’re making, and even the veil we’re customizing for my scarf! For now, enjoy these soft photos that really don’t do justice the intention and care going into these very special pieces to accompany this very special day!!
